What a year, this year! 2018 is definitely going to be logged under the category “glad that it’s over, hoping for a fresh start into a better year”. Although on a personal level nothing terrible happened and we are still very lucky and happy, it took a lot of effort to not let this downer of a year drag us down with it.

I don’t want to get too much into politics, but listening to the news this year has been straight out exhausting. For my friends in other countries, this shitshow of a president must be quite entertaining, but close up this mess is getting quite scary. Only two more years to get through somewhat unharmed.

Another annoying and unpleasant theme of this year was the weather. While Germany had the summer of a century, we broke one negative weather record after another. March and April made for one of the coldest springs ever with both ten degrees below average. Then, the rain set in: 3rd wettest May on record. July, 2nd wettest month on record, wettest summer on record. Wettest autumn on record, coldest November in twenty years. Wettest year on record ever with a total of 65 inches (1,65m) by the end of the November.

Basically, it always rained, was cold, or a swamp outside. We could barely do anything outside this year – no camping, no hiking, barely any bike tours. Green grass turned into brown mudpits everywhere. What a mood killer.

On the bright side, I think this year was a good wake-up call for a lot of people to show that the effects of climate change are real and do affect our lives.  People are starting to prepare for this new normal of torrential downpours and flash floods and all of the landscaping and storm drains around here have to be completely rethought and re-built for this wetter future. Now let’s hope that they also take actions towards changing the climate of the future.

In more personal news, we moved to a new house this year. Which may sound exciting, but was mostly adding a lot of stress. You can read more about the reasons why and how and when and where on our blog. The move was particularly stressful for Milo and me who were really attached to our old house, neighborhood, and neighbors. We felt yanked out of our stable comfort zone and put in a whole new environment where we had to start building memories and relationships from scratch. It took us both a few months to adjust, but I can happily report that we are now fully arrived and feel at home in our new house. We have met some great new people, love the neighborhood, and are making this place our home.

The kids started attending the new neighborhood school that has a little higher expectations overall. The kids are currently learning that being smart alone is not always enough, but you also have to put in work some times. One the one hand I’m glad that they learn this important life lesson now, but we are also trying to counteract the academic expectations with lots of fun and free time. The kids have made friends with neighbors and ride their bikes up and down the street on the dry days.

All of the guys in this house are still super passionate about ice hockey. Their highlight of this year was that their team, the Washington Capitals won the championship. The kids got to play on the championship ice in fall and they really advanced their skills this year. Lincoln plays hockey in up to three teams now, Milo was selected to play on a travel team, and Felix is on a recreational team. The travel team plays against clubs all over the bay region from Northern Virginia, to Southern Maryland, up to Northern Maryland. We usually have drives up to 1.5 hours and games almost every weekend, if not multiple per weekend. Lincoln started coaching the U8 level teams and is at the rink more days of the week than not.

Hockey has started to dominate our free time, but luckily the season is only for 5 months, and it is just such fun to see the kids be passionate about something, have fun, and learn. They are learning what teamwork means, how to support each other, work on mastering hard skills, and that you don’t ever give up. There hasn’t been a single day where they didn’t want to go to hockey even if it’s at 7 AM on a Sunday and most times when we come home from the rink, they go right down to our basement to practice some more. They are making great friends, learning life skills, and get plenty of exercise, while us parents build friendships with the other parents as well.

On top of moving our household, Lincoln also moved his business to a bigger warehouse this summer. They had outgrown their old place and needed more space to store goods. Covalent Activewear is continuing to grow and they also created a new line called Liakada that provides youth dance wear.

My job is still overall great, aside from some of the bureaucratic idiocies I have to deal with when one government requirement conflicts with another one. I manage the low-income energy efficiency program for the State of Maryland and it is very rewarding work. We handle 20 million dollars worth of projects for over 2000 families every year. It’s a pretty demanding task managing all the customer expectations, executing contractors, and the reporting and oversight requirements from the government, but it suits my organizing skills and never gets boring. My team here is a group of very motivated and smart people that are the opposite of what you would imagine when you think of government workers. Everybody works super hard and we are able to overcome bureaucratic burdens to help Marylanders save energy, money, and make their homes more comfortable.

Most of us are lucky enough to have a comfortable home they can afford, but there are thousands of people living amongst us that don’t have money for simple repairs and live between mold, asbestos, and with broken windows. Our programs have about 300 applications from people that are currently without a working heating system in the middle of winter. Here are some examples of the homes we work with:

Fixing up these homes puts everything else into perspective and we are very grateful for what we have.
